Many moons ago I wrote a small thing aimed at people completely new to Gambas3 and programming in general. It never really got finished (personal circumstances) but it is still valid and more important usable introduction to GUI programming in Gambas3 and best of all downloadable as a pdf. Mail address in there is no longer valid and maybe some here on the forum contributed to grammar corrections and more. Check it out and discover…
In those days, I had big plans on a whole series (this was part 2, part 1 was on installing and compiling gambas and no longer valid as we moved from subversion to git). I like writing training manuals as I have worked as IT trainer for a good 5 to 6 years back in the 90ies (also developing training materials now and then).
I learned a lot a long time ago on a Gambas forum before this one (White Islands software) and learned just by trying to solve the problems people reported on the forum. Try to replicate them in a vm and see what was causing it. Kind of what I see Bruce doing on this forum, getting smarter by the day, while helping others![]()
I discovered a lot in those days merely by doing that (and reading the wiki over and over again many, many, many, many times…) I had some open source projects in those day on the old forum all about supporting Gambas somehow or discovering it's possibilities.
Gambas is great for so many things, I really love programming in Gambas and have several private projects (for my own use).
Well, enjoy it some more…
Gambas Guru was between White Island Software(WIS)/GambasForum and this current forum. The GambasForum part of White Island Software morphed into Gambas Guru since I wanted to give the former Gambas Forum (prior to White Island) back it's own identity.
Back in those days we had a good core of knowledgeable members who were always ready to help out and share their knowledge. I learned a lot from Willy, Quincunxian, jornmo, cogier, stevedee, and most likely a half dozen others that I've forgotten. Willy was very active on the old forums and his How-To-Gambas write-ups were a huge help to Gambas newbies (and not so newbies).
That link provided some memories (some great, some not so good). Even after all these years, I still haven't read all the way through that PDF.

It's great to read that people actually still find and use the guide. I never really get feedback on that. Not that strange if it mentions contact info of days long gone…Poly said
I feel really honored to be in contact with such important people from Gambas.
Thank you very much for this great "How to…."
For the work you have put into the creation and thus for the support for Gambas.![]()
Thank you for you kind words..

The header image of the old site brought back some good memories. White Island Software was named after an actual island (actually more like a sand bar off the main island) I had visited when I traveled half way around the world to visit the woman who eventually became my wife. That header image was one of the pictures I took while we were on that island.
Here is some more memories to have a look at, all the projects I used to host thanks to you Sholzy as facilitator.
- Project How To Gambas meant as a series but only got 1 part finished and 1 part pre-released (almost finished)
- Project ShowCase a sort of software center for distributing Gambas3 applications (before Benoit wrote Gambas Farm)
- Project GambOS an ubuntu based OS where core applications where slowly replaced by Gambas3 applications (like I wrote gbEdit as editor, someone later made a calculator gbCalc etc. It also had complete Gambas IDE and all above (guides, ShowCase etc) pre-installed. There was an .iso file to install and a VirtBox image.
All was aimed at making Gambas more know and easier to learn for newcomers.
And I did have a nice group of people helping out with testing software, proofreading, suggestions etc.
Good times…

Minor correction, it was me that started this forum, I asked jornmo for help as he had greater knowledge of forums than me. I have, unfortunately, I've not heard from him for years.
If anybody would like to take over the running of the forum let me know as I am 70 now, and I am sure someone younger would have more drive.

That brought back some mixed emotions. Many times I thought if I could go back 10 years there would be things I'd do differently. I think I still have the old forum somewhere on my drive.
Thankfully cogier and jornmo were able to create this forum. My biggest attempt at helping was trying to create an off-line wiki since the IDE didn't have that ability at the time. I made one version and decided it was too difficult and time consuming to download the on-line Gambas wiki and make the modifications needed to run it locally.

Man… this is exactly how I got started the first time. The original Gambas Forum administrator was wanting to step away and I didn't want it to disappear so I volunteered to take it over. I had no idea what I was getting into.
I would love doing it again, but I'm not sure if I'm up to it. I retired a year ago so I'd have plenty of time but not the resources to keep it running. Several times I've wanted to get a dedicated server again to host my websites. Maybe if I were to go back to work part time this summer (which I've thinking about anyway because of boredom) I would give it some serious thoughts.
I still have the WhiteIslandSoftware domain…don't start thinking about it sholzy… don't do it….

I'm really impressed by all the people I'm dealing with here.
It's really great what you've done for Gambas.
A big thank you to you all for that.

Jeez, I really missed something.
Does this GBedit still exist?
So you've gained one more fan with me. But unfortunately one without great skills.

Stop, or their ego's and heads will swell up so much they won't be able to fit in the forum.

It was a crazy idea at the time, but what was crazier, was it worked. I think if I had actually given it any actual thought about it at the time, I would have never done it.

GambOS and gbEdit was a real thing, just didn't have a long enough incubation time before the fall of WIS and Gambas Guru.
I don't know if Willy still has a copy (I'd be surprised if he didn't). I might have a copy buried on my hard drive. Same with gbEdit.

Great skills comes with practice. Just think of some kind of rube goldberg type of apps (even if it's not useful) and try making it work. Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you think it's stupid or something you feel won't get answered. There will always be some new member that know less than you and will see the answers to your question and go, "aha!, I didn't know that could be done!"
There is a really good core of members here that do a really good job of teaching (cogier, gbWilly, quincuxian, BruceSteers, vuott, thatbruce).
I know I've forgotten more about Gambas than I had ever learned.
I haven't done much with Gambas in the last 5 years. 2 years ago I started working on creating an Android app for my phone. I started learning the language for that but realized my old brain couldn't retain what I learned, that's when I found MIT AppInventor. Not the greatest for creating really good apps, but it did what I needed it to do for personal use.

Yes, precisely because I am still a patient beginner, I think that I might be able to help other people because I have or have had similar problems myself.
I also know the documentaries and books very well and can refer to the relevant places.
I have already built a Desktop Capture tool for my own use. Not much, but it's a start.
And I have just found out how I can connect the image paths of a database with a picturebox.
Maybe someone will ask in the future.
I really enjoy Gambas, but I don't have a concrete project idea yet. I'm just playing around a bit. Especially at night, when I'm supposed to be asleep.
I am really glad to have discovered this small but ambinous community.
best regards

Yes, last seen running on a Mate 17 with Gambas 3.6.2 (using qt4 dependency) that is still running (now and then).Poly said

I still have the source code, but haven't touched it in over 10 years.
I believe the 'texteditor' part I used in gbEdit, was no longer available in qt5 (or something like that), and I was meanwhile occupied migrating a big Windows project to linux and Gambas, so I never got to it.
It is actually an (big) expansion on the Simple TextEditor example in How To Gambas part 2.
I still have all these projects from those days (all qt4 based), as long time ago I put them on dropbox, luckily. But haven't used dropbox in years, so it is kind of dusty there, except for apparently my HowTo still being downloaded.
Nowadays, I run an old laptop as git server to store my current development (besides on my laptop), so I haven't even a connection to dropbox. That is on some old system, that is still somehow surviving…
The thing I do not have anymore is the GambOS. The whole creating of a distro setup died with the system it was on and was too big for my Dropbox space.
Maybe try stuff like writing a Texteditor. Start off easy, look at what your distro's Texteditor offers, see if you manage to do the same and do it step by step. That is how my gbEdit started off, just have some coding challenge to do. You'd be surprised the number of hurdles you'd have to takePoly said

I remember that if you right clicked on a text file on my system in those days, the text could be opened by gbEdit ready for editing. Figuring that out took a while, but hey..it's was great fun and it improves your knowledge and skills…
Edit:
I've been diving into this and now know that I used editor from gb.qt4.ext. And that was deprecated in Gambas 3.8.I believe the 'texteditor' part I used in gbEdit, was no longer available in qt5 (or something like that),
