And there is some other news guide updates.

GambOS Background guide had another update. This time a redo of screenshots because changes made to GambOS Leaning Center because of the new forum and thus illustartions not matching current new version.
GambOS Leaning Center 1.0.2 had been released along side above guide.

If you run GambOS or have added GambOS repository top your sources and have an installed GambOS Learning Center, just run apt-get update and apt-get upgrade (with elevated rights) to get newest application versions.

patch-02.png

Today GambOS patch 02 was released. It will apply all that is in patch 01 and will update you Gambas 3.19.6+bpo to include the latest backport done.
If you apply this patch there is no need to apply patch 01.

Enjoy..

In the background some upcominhg software updates are pending, currently being tested by the contributor team.
They are all about some online reorganisations in regards to guide file downloads, guide installing, version update checking.
In short all got a bit more streamlined and better organized.

Once these go public, the contributor testing iso for GambOS build 26 will be created for the contributors to test (very small team, help welcomed)
At the same day, I suspect, a GambOS build 26 image for Raspberry Pi Model 4B will become available for the contributor team (we have no Pi testers yet, so feel free to join)

Depending on the returned reports of the contributor team, I hope to, soon after release GambOS build 26 in both iso (for amd64 and VM's) and image (for Raspberry Pi Model 4B advised 8GB edition).

Meanwile Gambas Book 2 is being written, instructions and code tested, typo's corrected…
Gambas Book 1 is being proofread and corrections returned added..

If you check the news page (that doesn't include all GambOS software updates), you can see that there is continueous progress being made on improving the existing and creating the new.

If you want early access or are the kind of person who could spend some time helping out, please, join the team, we could use the help.
You can always send me a private topic, if so desired

GambOS build 26 images for Raspberry Pi are in testing.
A new build 26 iso is in the making to be on par with the Pi images.

The iso will not need much testing as it will only have a few packages added to the default installed.
The EFI boot and all other has already been tested and approved.

A new release is on the horizon with a new greeter for GambOS

A few GambOS applications have had an update and a change of application icon.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade for those using GambOS or GambOS repository on a supported distro.

GambOS build 26 is planned for release upcoming weekend.
It will be released as:
- an .iso file for installing on amd64 or virtual machine (with both Legacy and UEFI boot)
- an .img file for using on both Raspberry Pi model 4B and Raspberry Pi model 5

Running GambOS build 25?
- make sure to run the latest GambOS Software Center (1.0.8) and do the GambOS update to prepare your system for a build upgrade. Do it NOW
- you will have early access to what build 26 is by an upgrade that will become available in GambOS Software Center 24 hours (or maybe even more) ahead of release of build 26.
This will upgrade your installed build 25 to what build 26 is.

You might have noticed the countdown timer for GambOS build 26 release on the home page of gambas.one.
So, if you are curious about wanting to use GambOS, wait for that release instead of installing the current release.
The iso now supports UEFI boot and there is now an image for GambOS on Raspeberry Pi model 4B and model 5.

All that is not available for the current GambOS build 25 which is Legacy boot only iso and no Rasperry Pi images.

For our loyal user of GambOS that already have GambOS build 25 installed.
1. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
2. Run GambOS Software Center and if you see 'GambOS update' do it, to get to build 25.3 status

Somewhere in the upcoming day (between 24h and 12h before the release), I will upload a new GambOS update that will add the new features of build 26 to your installed GambOS and upgrade you to build 26.
Just run GambOS Software Center and the 'GambOS update' in there, that's all.

This ahead of the build 26 release is a token of thanking you for using the very first public build of GambOS .

Now that build 26 has been release, I'm back to writing Gambas Book 2.

The core idea of the Gambas Learning Guides is to actually experience and work, with at least a part, of the applications provides on GambOS and then learn to build them yourself from the Learning Guides.
In between you get a lot of background on the matter discussed with even some parts of theorie.

GambOS build 26 came with a new application pre installed being GambOS Video Player.
In chapter 2 of book 2, you can learn how to build this video player, that is build in the same manner as in the guides.
Only difference is the specific GambOS custimizations.

Currently I'm writing chapter 4, where you get to learn how to build a Pdf Viewer.
Paralel to writing the chapter GambOS Pdf Viewer is being developed and released to the contributor team for testing.
Below version 0.1.3 - Alpha 3, more to be added.

GambOSPdfViewer 0.1.3 - Alpha 4

Once chapter 4 is ready GambOS will have its own GambOS Pdf Viewer to replace Atril.
Again, you will be able to learn how to build this from Gambas book 2.

And there is more to be added to Book 2 before release
It just takes time to write, screenshot, test, proofread, rewrite parts, re screenshot parts, etc.

Below a sneak peak on the Pdf Viewer chapter (and the general planned, not guaranteed, content)…

GambOSBook2.png

It will take a while, but it should be worth the wait.
I'm really enjoying developing these applications

A little status update:
GambOS PdvViewer
Version 0.1.6 - Alpha 7 is in testing.
This is what you will learn to build in Book 2

SneakPeak.png

Gambas Learning guides - Book 2
Almost at the end of chapter 4, meaning an almost finished PdfViewer to learn how to code.
There are more chapters to add before release. It is becoming a quite big book (in size on the disk), so I might be splitting the planned content into two books.

GambasBook2.png

Enjoy the sneak peak..

In creating the PdfViewer trouble was encountered O_o
And together with the small contributor team, the final conclusion was that it could be caused by a bug in gb.poppler.

So, I started a topic on the Gambas mailing list to discuss if this was a bug or if it was related to certain PDF formats.
Long story short, it was a bug and got repaired in master branch of Gambas.

Last evening/night I backported the fix into Gambas 3.19.6+bpo. Today I updated my private test repo with these new binaries and run some tests.
The backport was succesful and the PdfViewer is working as expected.

I pauzed my writing and developing the PdfViewer during this period (good half week) as I was writing on the part that was bugged.
I will have to do some rewriting and re screenshotting on parts that where already written, but at least I can now continue.

I have updated the GambOS repository with these new binaries, so I advise a:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

After the update you will have a fixed gb.poppler component in Gambas 3.19.6 that has not yet been released in official

Enjoy..

Little status update on how the pdfviewer is coming along.
It's a bit ahead of where the guide is on explaining how to build one yourself, but it's not far off.

And it's begining to look like a lean, mean, viewing machine…

Next in line to be added to GambOS is GambOS ScreenCapture

GambOSScreenCapture.png

It will become a chapter in Gambas Book 2 so you can build one yourself.
Meanwhile the contributor group has the availability of said Book 2, finished up to chapter 4, the pdf viewer chapter.
That chapter became a very long and extensive study of gb.poppler and much more, so they'll be having their fun for a while

I'm first going to focus on adding proofreader corrections to Gambas Book 1 and publish these, before I start the chapter on Screencapture in Gambas Book 2
After the Screencapture there will be one more application, being an image viewer, that will be added to both GambOS and a chapter in Book 2.

That will make for a total of 4 chapters on building 4 applications and there are, up to now, 3 chapters, one more theoratical, the other 2, intermezzo's in between application chapters, are learning about the power of Gambas.
And there will always be a concluding chapter with provided answers to missions you where send on

As you can see below, chapter 1 to 5 are finished (screen taken by GambOS ScreenCapture)

  GambOSBook2Tease.png

All the other material planned for this guide (3 more applications and who knows what) will go into Book 3, as Book 2 is becoming fat

Anyway, GambOS is growing and so are Books

Writing Chapter 6. Simple Screen Capture is going well and so is GambOS Screen Capture.
Currently in testing and in Beta stage. Once finshed it will be part of GambOS.
It has changed a bit since you last saw it.

GambOSScreenCapture.png

Several applications to learn how to build in upcoming Book 2. Just needs to get it finished writing, making screenshots, adding corrections etc.
It just takes time, way more that build GambOS Screen Capture.
Sceenshots for the illustration in Book 2 are now done with GambOS Screen Capture …
