What are these points for?

Points.

Most forums use just a post count to advance active members through a forum's ranking system - the more you post, the higher you travel through the ranks, and possibly get a different title under your name. Our old phpBB forum used that type of system. Our new system uses points. This is because you can earn points by doing more than just making posts.

Beside the normal getting points for posting, you can gain points by "liking" some's post. You can gain points adding entries in the Gambas Resource Center's "Knowledge Base" and "Tips and Tricks". Also points can be acheived by creating Wiki content, or writing a blog. This allows members who want to help out in more ways than just answering posts to be recognized and move up through the ranks. You can also give points to another member to reward them for the work they do such as helping a new Gambas user get through a difficult programming problem.

As of this post, points breakdown is:

Points awarded (per task):

• When you became a member: 25
• Create a topic or post: 5
• Your content liked by someone (you receive): 3
• You liking someone's content (they receive): 3
• Voting in website polls: 5
• Per daily visit: 1

Gift points are points you receive from Gambas One that you can give to another member as rewards.
Promotion threshold points are the points that you have earned from doing a task, such as posting. 
(starting gift points + daily visit points + task points = threshold points) 

Based on a member's contibution to the site or forum, the SiteDir can promote the member to a higher rank prior to the member accumulating the required number of points.
